October Adsense Earnings

Hello good people!
Sun! We have sun here in Chicago. Yesterday was freezing rain and gloom (Winter is here – RUN) and today it’s sunny and in the 50’s. I’ll take it!! One more day of jogging outside before I get shunned to the treadmill in the bowels of my building.
Today I want to talk about last month’s Adsense and Amazon earnings. I’ve been putting it off for a few days because a) the numbers were bad and who really wants to dwell on bad numbers, and b) because Google released a couple of algorithm changes that I wanted to talk about them.
But I’ve procrastinated enough…let’s dive into data.
A look at the numbers
Google first launched their major new Panda update towards the end of September. All my sites took a nose dive across the board. September numbers ended strong even with the dip at the end…but October started down and stayed down.
You can see a snapshot of my October Earnings as well as a screen shot of my adsense profile at that link. But briefly, the numbers were:
Adsense Stats:
Number Of Websites: 300
Page Views: 67,047
Earnings: $1,404.70
Amazon.com Affiliate Stats:
Total Sales: $5,054.65
Total Commissions: (at 6.50%): $329.20
Items Shipped: 90
Items Returned: 2
Which is a massive decrease across the board in every category from September.
It’s a 57% decrease in adsense earnings and a 59% decrease in amazon earnings. As well as a 45% decrease in page views, and a 66% decrease in items bought through amazon.
And another really weird statistic…cost per click was down 11% versus September and down 27% from August. I can’t tell you the exact cost per click numbers because it’s against Google’s terms and conditions (ask yourself why sometime!).
What does it all mean?
Basically, I knew the numbers were going to be down. Frankly, I’m surprised they weren’t down even more than they were. Under the circumstances (death by Panda) I’m quite happy with the results.
And on some levels, it’s my own fault. I took most of September off, didn’t build a single new site or do much of anything with my Adsense empire. If I had been building new sites, the numbers would have been up where they were in August or September.
And I didn’t build any new sites in October either. Partly because I was trying to make heads and tails of this new Panda update, partly because I was working on a bot that will create new sites for me automatically, and partly because I was lazy again.
So it’s going to take a month or two of steady building, followed by a little time for Google to index my new sites, before I start to see income levels rising again. And I’m ok with that. It’s the name of the game, after all.
Today was supposed to be Mailbag Friday where I answer some of the questions that have come in throughout the week, but I wanted to talk about these numbers since I’d been putting it off for the last few days. I’ll go ahead and do the Mailbag tomorrow..which is starting to become a tradition!
Keep on building!
