Neat Google Keyword Trick for On Page Optimization
By: John Elder posted in SEO
Hello good people!
Here’s a really cool, super quick, incredibly easy trick to find out exactly what Google thinks about your web site and any given keyword.
Getting ranked well at Google under a given keyword is the prize all SEO types covet. That’s the whole ballgame! The problem is, it’s often hard to know what Google really thinks about your web site, and that makes it much harder to get ranked well.
Here’s a trick that will help.
Head over to Google and type in this search string:
KEYWORD site:http://www.yoursite.com
First, notice that there’s a space between KEYWORD and site:http://www.yoursite.com but there is no space in site:http://www.yoursite.com
Second, replace KEYWORD with whatever keyword you are interested in.
Third, replace http://www.yoursite with your own site URL.
So what does this search string do?!
It shows you what google thinks of your web site and that keyword. It shows you all of the pages of that web site that relate to that keyword, and it shows them in order of how important Google thinks they are.
So if I go to Google and type in SEO site:http://www.marketingfool.com it shows me a list of web pages at marketingfool.com that relate to the keyword SEO.
So what?
Well, for example I would have thought that Google considered www.marketingfool.com/beginners-quick-start-seo-guide far more important than www.marketingfool.com/i-should-do-what-with-my-seo but it’s the exact other way around!
That’s priceless knowledge! Now I can go in and tweak that page to make it more optimized for the keyword SEO if I want (I won’t because I don’t care…but if I did, I would!).
This isn’t just great for finding the rankings of internal pages and keywords…it can tell you if Google considers your site at all in connection with a certain keyword.
If I go to Google and type in Live Nude Girls site:http://www.marketingfool.com nothing comes up (well TODAY nothing comes up, in a few days I’m sure THIS page will appear under that search string). If I was optimizing my site for Live Nude Girls, I’d need to know that Google doesn’t consider my web page important enough to index under that phrase.
And the fun doesn’t stop there! You can use this trick as a competitive intelligence gathering tool! How does your competitor rank under certain keywords? Find out quickly with this trick!
I love this trick, it’s so quick and easy and it tells you just a ton of incredibly important stuff.
